Gippsland-based musician, composer and songwriter Dan Musil has released a new solo EP, bringing his genre-bending slide guitar work to listeners across Australia and beyond.
The new release, simply titled Dan Musil (EP), was released on 24 April 2026, with a launch show held at Major Tom’s in Kyneton on 1 May. The EP is available through Bandcamp.
Known for his distinctive touch on slide guitar, Musil’s music moves between haunting instrumental pieces, acoustic blues, Celtic-inflected tunes, social satire, lullabies and reflective musical meditations. His official biography describes his work as combining the “provocative and the calming,” with music shaped by improvisation, collaboration and a strong sense of place.
The new EP also carries a direct Gippsland connection. In a recent post reflecting on the recording process, Musil wrote that the music was recorded on Gunaikurnai Country, describing the challenge of turning music that changes each time it is played into a fixed recorded version. The result is a release that tries to preserve the spontaneity and “momentary magic” of live performance while offering listeners a permanent document of the songs.
For Musil, improvisation is not an afterthought but a central part of the music. In writing about the EP, he reflected on how many of his pieces are rarely fully “settled,” leaving space for unexpected ideas to emerge each time they are performed. That spirit is evident in the release, which includes a new version of his tune “Tether”, a piece he says has continued to evolve over nearly a decade.
Musil has performed at venues and festivals around Australia and internationally, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with artists including Marissa Quigley, Van Walker, Lucy Wise, Tim Guy, Anna Smyrk, Lucas Paine, Whoa Mule, Catgut, Power & Greig, Brother Johnstone and The Woolworths Blues Singers. He has also composed music for short films and video projects.
The EP adds to a growing list of recent Gippsland-connected music releases, highlighting the depth and variety of original music being created across regional Victoria.
